Our clean energy projects will utilize coal, natural gas, wind, solar and biomass resources for independent power generation. Typical of the distinct excellence and quality standards that we routinely pursue, our 695-MW, (net) Longview Power project will be one of the cleanest and most efficient coal plants in the United States when it begins operation in 2011. Located in Maidsville, West Virginia, the $1.8-billion facility will use supercritical pulverized coal (SCPC) technology, combined with advanced combustion pollution control technologies, to keep air emissions among the lowest of the nation's coal-fired fleet.
For the Longview Power project, AMDRI, GenPower's not-for-profit affiliate, operates an acid mine drainage treatment facility to mitigate the ecological impact of contaminated water from an abandoned coal mine near neighboring Dunkard Creek in Pennsylvania. Acid mine drainage to area waters is one of the region's most pressing environmental concerns. The AMDRI facility has the capability of treating and safely releasing 10 million gallons of water per day. AMDRI received a Performance and Innovation award from the U.S. EPA in November 2006. The project offers an outstanding example of how communities and private companies can collaborate to address acid mine drainage, one of Pennsylvania's most prevalent sources of water pollution.
In another example, a GenPower predecessor developed a 50 MW biomass-fired boiler for Public Service Company of New Hampshire's Northern Wood Power Project in Portsmouth, NH. Resulting in significantly reduced emissions and one of the largest renewable energy projects in the United States, the project features a reduced carbon profile due to the large CO2 absorption of biomass prior to harvest.
Both the Longview Power and Northern Wood Power projects exemplify excellence in environmentally advantageous design and serve as leading examples of GenPower's commitment to promoting clean, sustainable energy.
