Longview Power's Charles Huguenard to Speak at West Virginia Energy Summit
New Merchant Coal Plant Poised to Play Significant Role in Meeting West Virginia Alternative and Renewable Energy Objectives
December 2, 2009 — Maidsville, WV — Longview Power Vice President and General Manager Charles Huguenard has been invited to review the status of the Longview Power Project at the upcoming West Virginia 2009 Energy Summit, West Virginia’s Commitment to Energy Security. Mr. Huguenard will describe Longview Power as an example of how merchant coal plants can help West Virginia achieve a more versatile, sustainable energy portfolio for the state. The 2009 West Virginia Energy Summit will take place on December 8, 2009 at the Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, West Virginia, and will be hosted by West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin.
Longview Power, a new, 695 megawatt (net) electrical power generating facility currently under construction, also announced today that the project is now overall 83 percent complete, and that commercial operation is scheduled to begin in early 2011. The project is owned by Longview Power, LLC, which is in turn majority owned by GenPower Holdings, L.P (“GenPower Holdings”).

Longview Power will be one of the cleanest, most efficient coal-fired power plants in the United States. To date almost four million man-hours and $1.4 billion dollars have been expended on what is the largest private investment in West Virginia history, with over $500 million devoted to sophisticated environmental control systems. Both Longview Power and GenPower support regulatory initiatives that mitigate the long-term carbon impact of power generation projects.
The project has already received national distinction. In June it was certified as a Star member of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). VPP Star certification recognizes the highest level of occupational safety and health achievements by employers and employees.
Once operational, Longview Power’s best-in-class advanced supercritical pulverized coal process technology will ensure greater efficiencies and enhance the region’s electricity infrastructure Longview will meet or favorably exceed the U.S. EPA’s Best Available Control Technology (BACT) air quality standards through the use of low NOx burners with over-fire air, selective catalytic reduction, fabric filtration, lime injection, and wet flue gas desulfurization systems. Further, the project will use locally available coal, limestone, and landfills, minimizing the carbon emissions and other potential environmental impacts that result from traditional transportation needs.
Mr. Huguenard will also present highlights of the broad economic benefits the project brings to the region’s economy. Over 1,900 personnel are currently on site, keeping the project ahead of schedule. Once operational, Longview will directly employ approximately 95 people in the Morgantown area, and generate up to 467 additional jobs in the region. Mining employment will increase by several hundred jobs in the region. Over $421 million of direct expenditures from the project are estimated to be made in Morgantown and the surrounding area. Associated facilities, including coal conveyor systems and water treatment plants, are located in neighboring Greene County, Pennsylvania.
